Hi All
I’ve made a list. It’s too long and not specific enough. I’m sure you’ll all do better.
I’ve put a * next to the things I think I can bring and share.
I put a + next to the things that I would like for Harold to provide or someone to bring.
I put +/* next to things that I eiher have and would like more of, or would be willing to buy/go in on with someone.
1.
1.a. Paper:
1.a.i Large Paper
*- Standard largest-size arches/reeves
*- Some decent paper of an appropriate weight for serigraphy
+/*- Would love to get a giant custom ordered roll, so we could get crazy paper dimensions 10′x10′ ish does anyone know of a good resource for this?
*- I don’t know if people are down for some nostalgic figure drawing sessions, but I like to use rolls of butcher paper for that jazz.
+- Vellum
1.a.ii Small Paper
* – some sketchbooks, including crazy nice watercolor/moleskins/ok bristol
+ – fresh made paper from the paper making lab
+/* – some paper appropriate for book making. I know this could be whatever, but maybe like the really thin paper that they use in bibles and that would be cool to make books out of. v. delicate and that.
1.b Dry Media
1.b.i Pens
* – Rapidographs of many sizes, with different colors and kinds of ink.
* – Microns of different sizes and colors
+ – Calligraphy Sets
1.b.ii Markers
+ – I’d like to work with nice markers, but don’t know where to start. Does anyone know where to get markers that can lay down matte color, don’t bleed, and mix nicely. Sounds fake?
1.b.iii Colored Pencils
+ – Same as above, I’d like to work with colored pencil, but don’t know what’s good.
1.b.iv Pastels
+ – Rembrandts
+ – charcoal
1.c Wet Media
1.c.i Paint
+ – Guache
+/* – Oil
+ – Watercolor
1.c.ii Inks
+ – Something nice to do delicate washes with
* – Coke/ Rootbeer
1.d Technology
1.d.i Video Camera
+ – something lo end (VHS, Hi 8)
+ – something high end (HD, 1080 or whatever)
+ – good directional mic
+/* – tripod
1.d.ii Still Camera
+ – digital, nice resolution, can shoot rapid succession of shots
1.d.iii Computer/software
* – macbook
* – CS3 Suite
* – Finalcut HD 2
+ – Aftereffects
*/+ – MaxMSP/Jitter
* – Snapz Pro
* -USB 2 external hd
1.e Movies/videos with subtitles
+/* – So I’m doing this project wherein I capture chunks of movies for their interesting subtitle/image relationship and then detournement it up by putting them together in halfsensical ways. Go pastiche, I know, but if you guys have foreign films or videos, or even, I guess, dvds with subtitle options, I’d love for you to bring them, b/c as is, i’ve been collecting from streaming media, which we won’t have out there. Thanks!
I feel like I’ve had a child. Hopefully this will spur some brave soul to follow suit. Childbirth, while perhaps painful and embarrassing, is cathartic, I’ve heard…
Hey Nick & co,
Would love to get in on big communal paper… I am a reeves fan and if anyone else is interested am very fond of their tan paper. But the most basic and versitile would be giant rolls of white. Yum.
I think I am going to need screenprinting ink (probably lots of white and a variety of other colors) and containers, etc. Janine, shall we plot together?
Otherwise I plan to bring guache and brushes and sketchbooks, etc, but my stuff is old and crusty and personalized and it’d be for my own use. I’ll look at my markers and suggest a brand…
Hopefully there will be room in my luggage some digital camera, possibly video but more likely still. If it’s the video camera we can all use it.
Ok, Nick, hope you are up and on your feet again after the difficult birth. Do they have paternity leave where you work?
Maggie
I can bring a decent amount of ink with me and some containers for mixing as well. I have a video camera as well that I can try to fit in with my packings. It is pretty okay, or, it gets the job done.
As for the paper.. I dig rives as well and oh yes the tan is so nice.. but for screen stuff I prefer something with a comparable weight, but less of a tooth like Strathmore bristol board (2 ply is good). The smoother the better.
As for finding odd sized and/or giant paper try New York Central Art Supply (http://www.nycentralartsupply.com/americas/usa.html).
alright, all right
Janine
This discussion brings up the question- if we want to have materials shipped to the Residency, what would be the proper protocol? Aka, what’s the address and would someone be available to receive shipments for us?

Hey Nick,
Man, you’ve done a great job with the blog! Thanks for all the work you’ve put into this, I’m really looking forward to the experience.
Re Materials: as mentioned, the only thing I’ll need is access to the high end cam and finalcut on the macbook.

I’m not sure how I’m going to get to Ohio, so I’m not sure what all I can bring if I have to bus it or whatever. The only thing I have to request is:
+* Heavyweight paper — Arches, Reeves, whateva
I’ll be bringing acrylics, sketchbook, brushes, etc. for myself. How about simple drawing tools — pencils, charcoal, etc.? I’m guessing Harold can come up with some of that. Sweet.
-Jon
Most likely I will be using wood, sheets of glass, fimo/beeswax/plaster or algenate, acrylic paint, and odds/ends type things. Over the next week I will be detailing out my ideas and therefore will know some of the odds and ends things more specifically. I assume I will bring all my own stuff…
However, I can also bring the following for sharing….let me know if anyone would be interested in using these…otherwise once my car starts getting full I might edit them out!
a print gocco (with both fabric and paper ink) for some degree of sharing (the lightbulbs are crazy expensive)
various embroidery materials (i have tons of fabric/felt and a fair amount of thread and beads). I will most likely only bring this stuff (excess to what I would be using) if anyone shows interest in using it….(Nick last week when we were out I discussed I believe with Joe doing some sort of embroidery/dying assistance session) I don’t know if this is really a desired activity so…let me know. I’d be happy then to also bring books related to different stitches which we can copy for cheat sheets…However, I don’t have dyes of my own so I can’t really do demos for that.
Sewing Machine…Is this possibly useful to anyone other than myself?
Tools: such as circular saw, drill, screw gun, clamps, miter box, hammers, pliers,etc. Would anyone else use these? Are they already in the woodshop?
I will also inventory my paper situation…I have tons of it (some could be used for bookbinding im sure) but I don’t know what kind off the top of my head. I have a lot of guache which I’d share but don’t exactly want to put up for grabs…
For markers…what about those prismacolor ones? That is what my sister uses for fashion illustrations. I am pretty sure you can layer and blend and they come in about a billion colors! They also make both soft and hard colored pencils which I always really liked. (my preference was soft) but again…about a billion colors.
PS. I wrote Ryan about projector but have not yet received a reply.

hey melissa,
all those materials sound great. We’d love a dye demo, what dyes are you thinking? It’s easy to get RIT dyes, but those are obv. not perfect. If you want to buy a reasonable amount for a demo, we would reimburse you. The woodshop tools I’m not sure about. Only woodshop techs will be able to use the heavy duty tools that are owned by the farm, so if you forsee using those a lot (or if anyone else lets you know that they want to use them a ton) do bring them. We do have screw guns etc. but of course it’s always good to have more…
Can’t wait!!
Nick
Nick….
the dyes I am familiar with are made by pro-chem. although I believe a company named Darma or Dharma??? also makes the same kinds of products. these are both non-toxic, safe to wash down the drain, etc. I learned to make monoprints although they are fairly unattractive (look more like tye dye), I personally like to do frotage (which is using a brayer over other objects…i like dyed string) but the things that may be more fun are discharging (basically bleaching out areas) and sun-printing which is done with a transparent pigment. I feel like that would be a more fun activity for everyone…you take 3-D objects and lay them on fabric but the dye wicks (sp?) away from the object so there is gradation (say you use a pine cone…whatever parts are touching will show up the most but it reveals shadows, etc. also) it looks really good with plants…grasses and leaves and things. there are also various kinds of resists and presists as well…
for dying: we would need print paste, urea water and the dye powders. also a product for washing (begins with an a but I have to look it up)
the discharge is just a chemical i believe
and the sun-prints are done with transparent pigments (they come in various colors) so there are obviously opaque pigments as well for “stamping” or painting—they sit on the surface.
we would also need an iron(I can bring this)…for dying and access to a washing machine..
let me know what you want me to do…if you want to kind of survey the amount of interest I can place an order for some basic stuff….they ship pretty fast but I would want to do it as soon as possible. This also means that you should suggest to others that they bring a few pieces of natural fiber fabrics (ie. linen, cotton, silk—although silk isn’t supposed to be as good with this kind of dye I had it work ok, washed muslin…fabric can be treated and that will prevent the dye from adhering) if we use pigments and discharges you can do more with clothes and what not…(like tee shirts)
Is there a chance I could become a woodshop tech??? If I come early? Just wondering..
okay…..let me know!

I just read through everyone’s list of materials.
I am not a print artist so I will not be bringing any kind of papers or markers but it was interesting to read through all of the descriptions of them :)
I will be bringing my mini-DV camera, a shitty tripod, lots of mini-DV tapes, my computer and external drive (so is there a good spot that is conducive for solitary computer editing?), maybe I’ll bring a second camera for B Roll footage and maybe even my Bolex…
I didn’t understand Nick Wylie’s code of what he has or what he wants but I can bring some Woolite for washing delicates and I’ll bring some movies with subtitles
I’m nervous but starting to get excited…-C
hello all,
I will , for my week three film/installation project, be constructing CRYPODS, which is exactly like it sounds; Ipods but instead of playing music you get inside them and they cry on you.
this actually might not be the best project to work on in the woods materials wise but we’ll see.
this is the most complete general materials list I can think up right now, if you have any of this stuff lying around or if you have a project that might also use this stuff I would greatly appreciate you bringing it along.
thank you thank you.
spool of shiny or mat white material-as much as you have or want to donate.
old hula-hoops.
good lighting.
crafting tools- needles thread a sewing machine!
sad things-movies books photos of old pets
I also need to make the form that eventfully emerges from the CRYPOD so if you have slimy embryonic type stuff, that would help.
I know what I envision this to look like but I don’t know exactly what to use materials wise so anything you can think up would be great. I’m trying to create a real seaweed, birthing, sea creature gasping for air vibe! (if that makes sense)
I also need People!-
please help me by allowing me to film your most private sad moments in the completed CRYPODs. its no big deal it does most of the work. you just sit in there and do whatever you want while IT cries for you.
thanks again looking forward to meeting you soon
