Below is a description of my summer video projects. I will be doing some shooting down in the woods and I need a lot of B Roll of natural settings. I do a lot of independent shooting and camera work but it would be interesting to see what other people see when they shoot. It would be awesome if anyone wants to help me collect footage. They could use my camera at times our their own and I will provide the tapes. Also my on-camera mic is pretty decent for ambient noise but if anyone is recording any “natural” or forest noises I would like to talk with them.
I have begun production on three short video projects that reference each other. They explore my creative process and my relationship with cinema.
• In my first piece I re-staged scenes from Francois Truffaut’s “Jules and Jim” in the city of Chicago. Through the images I comment and discuss the weight of carrying and holding onto artistic intention, and specifically for me, how cinema became heavy and the fear of producing film. The French New Wave filmmakers were a direct reaction to the weight and opulence of filmmaking. In direct influence of their work I embraced their style of light camera work and quick shooting. This short piece is already shot and needs to be edited; I will edit this piece at Harold.
• My second piece is an experimental narrative exploring my creative process and my relationship with cinema. I tell a slightly romanticized version of my birth story and the mystery of uncovering the natural creative instinct. The natural human traits are echoed by images of nature. I will be utilizing shots of woods, trees, animals, insects, water etc. Also there is the fairy-tale theme of going “into the woods” to hide or find things. This project is in production and I would like to continue the shooting process at Harold.
• My third piece in this process is a short narrative story- I will be writing this piece at Harold.
Film and motion picture images, rhythm and texture are as important as the stories that they jointly create. I often isolate and study small aspects of longer pieces and from time to time I screen them as installation pieces. I would hope that I can produce these at Harold and the installation would be a finished product that I can leave with.
Hi Clara,
This sounds like an interesting project. Self-portrait?
It is good to sit down and read about your ideas/plans for this piece? I guess that my main question is about structure. It is one piece, correct? I can see that this piece probably has an experimental structure, and so may I ask is there a distinct beginning or end/do you know which vignette will start and which will end? I could also see them as the same archetype that is manifested in these different ways (that you refer to as rhythm and texture.) Or do you view them as different archtypes that all come together to reveal a more well-rounded view of your specific creative-process?
You may not be concerned with structure at this point. But after reading your plans, those are some thoughts that popped into my mind.
Best,
Mary
sorry! That first sentence about it being good to read your description was meant to be a statement not a question. typ-o disaster… It is/was good to read about your project.
yikes,

M,
It’s actually 3 different pieces (so far). And I do actually think a lot about structure. I look forward to talking about our projects more.
